[edit] Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium (ASHSSS) 2008 & 2009 IPY special session

Into the third decades of its operation, Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium (ASHSSS) (http://www.ashsss.uaf.edu/about.php) and the UA IPY YRN dedicate to add a special ASHSSS IPY session for 2008 and 2009 to promote and increase the awareness of polar research. IPY-focused postdoc fellows and graduate students will co-mentor the dictated/motivated high school students in their own research and, in doing so, guide high school students into and through the process of conducting exacting research, writing scientific papers, and preparing for the delivery of research results through an oral intensive PowerPoint process in the ASHSSS during 2008 and 2009. Eight to Twelve students will be competing in this special session. The top two presenters will then compete with students from other sessions in the finalist.

Educational goals:

• Bring unique polar research perspectives and experiences to the Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium (ASHSSS);

• Embrace and stimulate high school student’s interests in polar science by providing hands-on science experiences;

• Connect polar researchers with high school science teachers to co-mentor high school students toward developing skills in data collecting, hypothesis forming, and scientific report writing;

• Increase awareness and promote appreciation of polar research and education by disseminating work nationally and internationally.
