The IPY Young Researchers Network had a booth, actually an igloo, at Ice Alaska. Ice Alaska ran from February 27 to March 25, 2007. Contact Laura Alvarez Aviles (ftlaImage:aat.gifuaf.edu) for details.

Our igloo was a hit, especially on judging nights and when Travis Booms and Phil the gyrfalcon drew the crowds. Blowing freezing bubbles was popular with the kids, and all enjoyed inspecting different animal furs. We distributed a lot of flyers and IPY zipper-pulls (thermometers and compasses). The challenge was conveying some sense of what IPY was, while avoiding feeling like a salesman! Overall I think it was a success, and a great way to slowly start familiarizing the Fairbanks community with IPY. By the end of Ice Alaska, our network members spoke to approximately 1,700 people!
